Obsessing not just over the usual '60s icons, the New Pornographers have made a career as power-pop favorites by positing that the following decade's hit-makers - Wings, the Cars, Sweet - are equally worthy role models. Twin Cinema, their third album, follows its predecessors' blend of tightly packed hooks and often Dadaist lyrics while tweaking the formula in little ways. Neko Case's vocals, both solo and in support of her bandmates, are typically incandescent; she's joined here by new keyboardist-singer Kathryn Calder. Though the order of the day is usually smashingly upbeat concoctions like "Jackie, Dressed in Cobras" and "Use It," Twin Cinema also excels at wistful balladry such as the Kinks-worthy "Bleeding Heart Show." The band's musical momentum seems likely to grow after this excellent album.
