[Edit]Tuscon’s Okmoniks are the slightly more respectable sibling of Nobunny (they share musical demolitionist Justin Chamblin, the masked man behind Nobunny and wildman drummer with the Okmoniks). Vocalist Helene 33 has a rough-edged, bubblegum-punk yelp perfectly suited to the feral garage racket these four musicians bash and belt out with unbridled enthusiasm. Think ‘60s garage party gone bad — very bad — when mom and dad leave town. Think white-hot organ riffs, a battery of flinty tambourines and drums, and enough crude, snaggle-toothed guitar riffage to shred a hipster’s polyester suit in seconds flat. There are handclaps galore on “Teenage Timebomb,” overly caffeinated keyboards on “Hey I’m Ok,” and “Rustle Up Some Action” nails a hip-swinging beat, but “Not That Good” — penned by Chamblin and also recorded by Nobunny — has an unmistakable pop-punk lineage that hooks the listener like a black leather dog collar. You’re not going anywhere!
