Details
[Edit]Recorded in April 1968 during live sessions at the high-fidelity home studio of MPS Records' Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, Travelin’ On is the final installment in the acclaimed “Exclusively for My Friends” series. It features Peterson, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Bobby Durham rolling through a set of covers. Peterson is famous for his ferocious technique, and one of the more interesting moments here is what he does with Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars” as Durham plays a straight bossa nova beat (a sheet music comparison would reveal hundreds of additional notes not in the spare original). Uptempo numbers here include the galloping title track and a snappy “Sax No End,” while “Emily” is a lengthy ballad that offers more space. “When the Lights Are Low” serves the blues up nicely after a tender intro by the pianist. Peterson maintains that this series is the best work he ever did, and the quality of the playing and the recording make this hard to dispute. This set is now available digitally for the first time.
