[Edit]Trumpeter Bob Lark is the head of the jazz studies department at DePaul University but is virtually unknown in most of the jazz world. However on this set, he is joined by the great altoist Phil Woods, Woods' longtime sidemen bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin, and his former pianist Jim McNeely. Lark is not quite on the level of a Brian Lynch or Carl Saunders, but he is an excellent hard bop-based improviser with a warm tone and a creative imagination. Lark contributed six of the ten selections on this CD, which also has two bop standards and a pair of Woods numbers. The altoist consistently steals the show, still playing at his peak and creating one fiery and passionate solo after another, but Bob Lark fares well too. Hopefully he will record more often in the future outside of the college band circuit. Recommended.
