This deliberately retro-trio trio from Brighton, England return us to the glory days of the Girl Group sound effectively mastered by record producer Phil Spector. With excited falsettos, spirited handclaps and shameless cheerleading chants, RiotBecki, Rosay and Gwenno serve up a debut album of high-energy retro-pop that’s a lot more explicit than their ancestors ever imagined. Could a ‘60s girl group pull off “Dirty Mind,” “Sex” or “One Night Stand” without being run out of town in a smear of mascara? These fun-loving polka-dot dress wearing rockers occasionally find the clichés of the genre a tad confining. “Pull Shapes” colors within the lines, yet remains impressive as an incredible simulation. But “Judy,” “Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me” and “Because It’s Not Love (But It’s Still a Feeling)” work through the expected chord progressions and pop cadences to create fresh enthusiasm with a backing band that knows how to motor up the aggression. These are no wallflowers. They intend to take over the school.
