On their third album, Danish duo the Raveonettes continue pulling and stretching their Phil-Spector-meets-Jesus-and-Mary-Chain sound into new shapes and directions. A gritty, discordant feel reverberates throughout, echoing the theme of the tracks here (yep, lust and forbidden desire; good guess), even when vocalist Sharin Foo is cooing her way through a song as if violins and cellos were her musical backing. The two aimed for a heavier sound than 2005’s Pretty in Black, and they serve it up in heaping mounds here. Songs like “Black Satin,” the retro-pop “Dead Sound,” and the addicting and frothy “You Want the Candy” easily recall early JAMC, with ear-splitting shards of distortion giving way to airy, glistening guitar notes and Foo’s angelic vocals. Tracks like “Aly, Walk With Me” and “Lust” move at a sensuous, undulant pace, punctuated with Sune Rose Wagner’s reverb-warped guitar and occasional barbs of metallic noise. Overall, Lust, Lust, Lust is where raunch meets cotton candy, and that’s a combination that’s hard to turn down!
