On his second album for Six Degrees, the Real Tuesday Weld (aka Stephen Coates) takes up his alter ego of the Clerkenwell Kid in full form. The fare is primarily in the realm of ballads, but thoroughly built upon sampling, looping, and keyboard arrangements. The end result is in many cases like a more contemporary Serge Gainsbourg, with beats and grooves mixed in here and there. It's a relatively airy affair, if somewhat somber at times. It's a fitting mood for what would seem to be an album motivated in large part by lost love and reminiscence. The entirety of the album is slick and well engineered, with nary a beat out of place. Not quite at the over-produced level of ultra-lounge, but somewhere between retro-lounge and ultra-lounge at least. Very nice ambient music for the background of a long drive.
