[Edit]A nasal and whiskey-soured voice rides with a thoughtful guitar over a western canter of drums and bass on this album. The Revenants were formerly the Suicide Kings and their songs (e.g. "Forever" and "Flower on My Grave") bespeak a honky tonk salvation from a pitiful, hopeless life. With a six-string guitar former Gin Blossom Richard "Deke" Taylor supports frontman Bruce Connole on vocals with a country noir. Their interplay, especially the haunting harmonizing, could easily still idle conversation around a lonely campfire. A half-dozen guests dress up the tracks with pedal and non-pedal steel guitar, Dobro, piano, Hammond B-3, fiddle, accordion, and more. A modern slice of traditional Americana from the original recipe, the Revenants offer poignant songwriting and stark treatment of this material with rootsy instrumentation.
