The Saint James Society infuses its take on bygone acid rock with thick strands of '80s post-punk, creating a sound the band calls "Pentecostal Desert Glam." Howling guitar feedback introduces 2013’s Bab(a/y)lon Rising in the opening song, “Refractions.” Singing bassist Brandon Burkart has the kind of dramatic tenor that sounds inspired by a life of listening to records by Gang of Four, Southern Death Cult, and The Gun Club. The title track is a similarly shadowy rocker with a seductive rhythm under melodic guitar arpeggios. This time, Burkart is accompanied by the sultry backing vocals of percussionists Elza Burkart and Candice Bertalan. The standout “Blood & Sand” cranks up the guitar distortion to produce a Sabbathesque sludge and riffs so meaty you could barbecue them. But it’s the hypnotic harmonies of Burkart and Bertalan that prove most captivating. David DuBois’ guitar work is to be commended as well—he effortlessly segues from riffs into soaring space-rock leads and Hawkwind-inspired freakouts.
