After a four-year wait, the Saw Doctors release their third album on the newly formed Shamtown label. Same Oul' Town is full of explosive pop songs ("To Win Just Once" and "Macnas Parade") and tender ballads ("Same Oul' Town" and "Clare Island") revolving around life in Tuam, Ireland, but their recognizable themes and striking melodies reach far beyond their home turf. This recording was the impetus behind the Saw Doctors gaining attention abroad. In addition to their obviously engaging music, much of their appeal centers around the "regular guy" factor; They routinely chat with fans at concerts and convey a sincerity and humility that is often lacking among their rock & roll counterparts. Frequently overlooked is their proficient musicianship, particularly guitarist Leo Moran, who skillfully incorporates many styles into his delivery. It's not uncommon to hear country, rockabilly and straight-up rock & roll licks in his playing. Vocalist Davy Carton has the working-class persona down pat (he sounds a bit like Ian Hunter), and the rhythm section of Pearse Doherty and John Donnelly do an admirable job of steering the band down the rugged and bumpy backroads of County Galway.
