By this point, it was clear that the Sisters of Mercy would be whatever singer Andrew Eldritch decided it would be. Taking on the production duties and hiring an entire new band that included an unknown German guitarist, Andreas Bruhn, bassist Tony James of Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik and guitarist Tim Bricheno of All About Eve, Eldritch moved back towards guitars and a harder rock sound with some political complaints aimed at the U.S. thrown in for good measure. From the first riffs of the title track it’s apparent that this is a very different group from the one who gave the world “Some Kind of Stranger” and “This Corrosion.” “Ribbons” has an unusually chipper dance groove backing its rant. “Detonation Boulevard” pumps with flashy back-up vocals. “Something Fast” is actually quite measured and introspective, sounding much like a David Bowie track. This “Remastered” version of the album includes a remix of “When You Don’t See Me,” an extended version of “Doctor Jeep” and live versions of “Ribbons” and “Something Fast” that are much weirder than their studio counterparts.
