[Edit]There is something vaguely historical about Special Pillow's rekindling of flowery, melodic psychedelia — most of Ancient History chirps through string-laden chamber-pop psychedelia that's largely appealing, particularly when the slickness of its production gives way to dreamy minimalism ("Ladyfingers"). Apart from the pop, however, Ancient History has a few spacier inclinations: "Ascension to the Flower Garden..." swells dreamily through 15 minutes of echoing guitars and string touches, providing a decent counterpoint to the rigorously arranged quality of the band's pop tunes.
