[Edit]The Stone Roses self-titled 1989 debut album ignited the Madchester movement and set the Britpop bar higher than any of the band’s followers could reach — but bad timing, bad management, bad drugs, bad decisions, and bad blood kept them trapped in cult hero status. This 20th Anniversary Edition drops three discs of material guaranteed to satiate the appetites of both ardent disciples and curious newcomers. Disc one is The Stone Roses remastered — listen to it in your earbuds and every nuance of the album comes to life, sounding like you’re in the playback booth with producer John Leckie. If the epic guitar solo at the end of “I Am the Resurrection” doesn’t move you, music just might be none of your business. Disc two boasts remasters of the singles and B-sides. Standouts include the heavy-lidded psychedelia of “Something’s Burning,” the hip-shaking power pop of “Mersey Paradise” and of course the genre-defying “Fools Gold,” a perfect hybrid of acid house and acid rock. Disc three abounds with alternate takes and demos including the never-before-released “Pearl Bastard.”
