The debut LP for San Francisco noise-popsters The Stratford 4, the Revolt Against Tired Noises by no means creates sounds unheard to the discerning indie rocker, but does serve to refurbish them wonderfully. Signed to Jetset Records, Chris Streng (guitar, vocals), Jake Hosek (guitars), Andrea Caturegli (drums), and Sheetal Singh (bass) make dreamy guitar music wavering between the Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine, and Yo la Tengo, but at no point does their mind seem entirely made up. While their recorded innocence captures the frailties highly endeared in indie pop, like on the girl/boy vocalized "Autopilot," it is their confident wall of pop on "All Mistakes Are Mine" that shows their best face. Strengs' voice sounds hauntingly like Lou Reed at some points and maintains a calming effect while still straining to hit every rollicking note. One suspects the next effort from the four will be decidedly more unique, but for a debut these eight songs are well-worth checking out.
