The String Quartet Tribute to Jane's Addiction is an entertaining run through 11 Jane's songs, re-imagined as instrumental chamber music. Perry Farrell et al. always had a theatrical streak, and that angle is even more pronounced here, where Dave Navarro's heavy metal squeals cannot enter and Farrell's psychedelic visions wind their way through arrangements of cello, viola, violin, and bass. While "Mountain Song" seems perfunctory, it's with "Been Caught Stealing" that the tribute really hits its stride. With plucking viola and bass replicating the song's shuffling groove, violins trade off on the verses. The effect makes you smile and move your feet all at once — it's fun to picture a tap-dancing Farrell in suspenders and a high-collar tipping his straw hat to the camera.
