Details
[Edit]This collection of Dixie Chicks favorites arranged for viola, violin, cello, and double bass is an enjoyable listen, mostly because of the group's melodies and vocal harmonies, which draw so much from Americana. Replicated here, songs like "Long Time Gone" and "I Can Love You Better" recall the straight-ahead melodies of American popular song while suggesting the Appalachian tradition, in which music was a form of social interaction. But the real standouts here are "Ready to Run" and "Wide Open Spaces," which add banjo and mandolin to their complement of chamber instruments. With this combination of instruments, the songs fall somewhere between bluegrass and classical, and help trace the line between European parlor music and the traditional Americana idiom.
