Waterboys leader Mike Scott always had a grand vision for the Waterboys’ music. What’s most amazing about these piano demos for the group’s third album, This Is The Sea, is how large they sound despite just being piano and vocals. (Only “Old England” and “Trumpets” feature additional accompaniment.) The reverb is plied on thick and the piano is played with an aggression that makes up for a lack of a full band. The demos were recorded at Park Gates Studios in Scotland with Scott running through the songs in his notebook. It shows the development of the songs and many of the group’s most notable songs — “Don’t Bang the Drum,” “Be My Enemy” “The Pan Within” “The Whole of the Moon” — are here with changes in the lyrics. “All the Bright Horses,” “The Day I Ran Out of People” and “Paris In the Rain” are among the tracks that never made the final cut. Essential for fans.
