For anyone just now discovering Martin Newell and deciding to explore his massive catalog, the task can be daunting. Since the early '80s, Newell has been recording his British pop tunes regardless of who was paying attention. As a result, he's amassed a large, idiosyncratic collection. This album is an excellent place to start, since it features recordings he made as The Cleaners from Venus and The Brotherhood of Lizards, as well as under his own name. Some recordings are from his home studio and feature a bizarrely lovely lo-fi quality, while others were nailed down in more conventional professional settings. What consistently rings through is Newell's appreciable way with a melody. "Julie Profumo," "Drowning Butterflies," "Living with Victoria Grey," and "A Mercury Girl," for starters, capture Newell's passion and genius, fitting in with Robyn Hitchcock, XTC, and many other '60s-influenced pop masters.
