Details
[Edit]Formed by the brothers Denney (singer Dix and guitarist John) in 1976, The Weirdos were the punchiest, loudest, and most tuneful (if not most art-damaged) of all of the '70s L.A. punk rock bands, including X and The Germs. That The Weirdos never did a proper album in their heyday doesn’t matter, because they recorded a mind-numbingly great string of singles that would easily have worked as a soundtrack to crash your car to. (All are here except “Destroy All Music.”) There’s no denying that “We Got the Neutron Bomb” and “Solitary Confinement” could pretty much rival anything by The Sex Pistols, or that singer/lyricist John had a voice as big as LAX, but what’s equally incredible is the Earle Mankey–produced stuff here. It reveals a band that in 1979 was poised for world domination, especially with the monstrous “Happy People” and “Fort USA.” The domination didn’t happen, of course, but we still have the massive songs from one of the most overlooked bands in the '70s. (In 1991, they regrouped and recorded Condor with Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers.)
