[Edit]Should any of these songs sound immediately familiar, that could be because a couple of them surfaced on soundtracks for the televised biker drama Sons Of Anarchy and the 2009 mountain-biking documentary Race Across The Sky. The 2010 EP Prepare for Black & Blue opens with Jacob A. Smith (who incidentally is the White Buffalo) crooning in a Conor Oberst-like warble over tuneful acoustic guitar picking. “Love Song #2” is a sequel to “Love Song #1” from his self-titled EP released five years prior. Here, his lovelorn lament makes for a gripping Americana folk tune. “Oh Darlin’ What Have I Done” adds an electric guitar lead and eerie backing vocals that sound haunted by the ghosts of outlaw country’s past. A rustic old parlor piano gives the title-track a romantic feel as Smith picks delicate arpeggios while singing the darkest and prettiest tune here. “John Jameson” is a dipsomaniac lullaby where Smith sounds equal parts Oberst and Waylon Jennings.
