[Edit]In comparison to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Kinks—to name three other prominent British beat groups that emerged in the '60s—The Who released the least amount of material. The Who got the latest start and had the most deliberate songwriter in Pete Townshend, who began toying with the rock-opera concept as early as the band's second album. As a result, The Who's output can be largely collected in just a few albums. Thirty Years of Maximum R&B was issued as a four-CD set, featuring the group's hits (sometimes in alternate live versions) and a good sampling of its albums, along with oddities like commercials, Keith Moon jokes ("Life with the Moons"), and interview snippets with Townshend. Most excitingly, it contains material the band performed as The High Numbers. This can be considered an interesting entry point for new fans, while seasoned Who fanatics either will wish they could cherry-pick the rarities or will enjoy hearing the band's familiar history being told from a variety of angles beyond the scope of the average greatest-hits collection.
