Much more of a full-fledged album — albeit brief — than a stopgap release of leftovers, 1995's Glad builds on the advances the Wolverton Brothers had made with 1992's Liar Man. Continuing their fruitful association with producer Jon Langford, the Wolverton Brothers sublimated the twangy roots rock of their earliest releases in favor of a unique sound, pitched somewhere between the later, countrified direction of the Dream Syndicate and Green On Red, and on longer and more open-ended songs, like "Cold Spring," the sprawling, mesmerizing "Highway," and the more tuneful moments of Neil Young and Crazy Horse. All five songs are winners, both collectively and individually among the best the Wolverton Brothers have written up to this point.
