Fellowship

The three compositions performed by clarinetist Theo Jörgensmann's sextet are not much, just one-chord structures or very open pieces. However the individual solos, particularly by the three horns, are full of colorful adventure. Most of the playing is pretty free form although veteran altoist Charlie Mariano generally takes honors due to his lyricism. Soprano saxpohonist Petras Vysniauskas also has some dynamic improvisations while clarinetist Jörgensmann is somewhat overshadowed until his very explorative opening statement on the closing "It Will Come." The rhythm section reacts constantly to the lead voice's ideas, and the sections where the full group improvises together are generally quite worthwhile.
