A loose tapestry of roots rock and jangly pop, These United States delivers gritty rock-n-roll (“Night & the Revolution,” “End”), twangy folk (“Will it Ever,” “I’m Gonna Assemble a City”), and moments of melodic beauty (“The Secret Door,” “Good Night Wish”) with style and sincerity. Propelled by sharp guitar licks and particularly good use of pedal steel and piano, the songs twist and turn along with the inspired wordplay and stirring vocals of lead singer Jesse Elliott. Their intriguing lyricism touches on themes of country, identity, fear, and the fine line that sometimes separates desperation and optimism, and they pack in a lot of ideas while keeping the tunes chugging forward.
