Thin Lizzy was Phil Lynott’s band. It’s his voice, his melodic bass playing and his ambitious songwriting that made the band what it was. This debut album, recorded on the cheap, displays an ensemble that is adept at many different styles and not yet locked into their definitive sound. “Look What The Wind Blew In” gives us a hint, with its tough guitars and soulful vocals, but tunes such as “The Friendly Ranger At Clontarf Castle” and “Clifton Grange Hotel” are exploratory pieces that are charming while Lynott searches for his voice. The ballads have a true sense of Irish mourning. “Eire,” “Dublin” and “Saga of the Ageing Orphan” are touching and haunting pieces that sound very much a part of the early-‘70s folk scene. “Old Moon Madness” adds a Captain Beefheart-like chaos to the proceedings. This Expanded Edition features great sound and overdubbed and remixed versions of four album tracks that add an extra piece of color to these early recordings.
