[Edit]Like most releases on Southern Lord Records, this album from the New Orleans sludge-metal quintet Thou sounds unapologetically evil. Oakland Singles starts with “Smoke Pigs”—five minutes of rumbling, distorted thrash metal with some of the most brutal singing since Mike Williams first recorded with Eyehategod (also from New Orleans). “Their Hooves Carve Craters in the Earth” conjures images of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse over what sounds like detuned guitars buzzing, droning, and moaning through hulking bass riffs. Drummer Josh Nee plays with a kind of desperate ferocity that makes it seems like he’s trying to dig his way out of the La Brea Tar Pits. Doomy bass and haunting atmospheric noise loom over “Here I Stand Head in Hand.”
