[Edit]It wouldn't be a surprise to discover that the members of the Cleveland rock quartet Three Miles Out moonlight as a tribute band to some '70s group like Kiss or Cheap Trick, or even a hair metal act from the '80s. This mainstream, meat-and-potatoes rock & roll band, with its two guitars/bass/drums lineup and its familiar hard rock riffs, could have come from any period since the late '60s and made similar music. Now that they are on their second album, however, it's time to progress from the generic to the particular. Like their debut CD, TMO, this one is full of songs that express a kind of free-floating anxiety — the lyrical approach is "civilization and its discontents," with some romantic frustration thrown in for good measure. The trouble is that, if Three Miles Out are going to rise to the next level, not just be a regional band with a pleasant, familiar style, they are going to have to come up with something different, something of their own. On That's Life they haven't succeeded in doing that. This is still Hard Rock 101, and that's not going to get them out of Cleveland.
