Details
[Edit]Tift Merritt has been amassing a catalog of intelligent, heartfelt folk-country songs that have yet to break through in the manner of Lucinda Williams' or Patty Griffin's roadmap-of-Americana compositions. That could change with 2012's Traveling Alone. Behind the boards, Tucker Martine focuses Merritt in a way few producers can do. Throw in Calexico's John Convertino (an impeccable drummer), Eric Heywood (a pedal steel expert), Marc Ribot (Tom Waits' and Elvis Costello's go-to guitarist), and even Andrew Bird (on vocals and violin for the lovely duet "Drifted Apart"), and you have guests who know how to sympathize with a talented artist. Or, perhaps, Merritt simply wrote the best songs of her career. The title track reflects the lonesome truths of a musician who can only rely on herself. "Still Not Home" ramps up the tempo for a rocker that casual listeners might mistake for Emmylou Harris. "Spring" shows just how much natural beauty there is in Merritt's voice and how a backing group's restraint can yield the strongest results.
