The Mother Hips' Tim Bluhm's solo debut comes disguised as a folky, '70s-inspired singer/songwriter record (though the cover art recalls a mid-'70s offering by Kansas). It's definitely a West Coast sound with its American Beauty feel ("Harnessmaker's Song") and Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonies; "Girl Crazy" gives a nod to Brian Wilson. References to literature and the Golden State pop out in the lyrics, scribbled Neil Young-style in the CD booklet. But Bluhm's voice is that of a neo-Californian with a charming lack of polish and detachment — more like cynical Beck than sincere Jackson Browne — but with enough interest of its own to keep the listener curious about what's next on his agenda.
