The Un-Stableboy is psychedelic in the old-school, early Pink Floyd sense of the word; marked by an all-pervasive weirdness more than studio effects or other exotic trappings. Tim Mungenast is an excellent guitar player whose songwriting has a uniquely warped and surreal bent to it. His is a world where dead trees walk around, (possibly) imaginary alligators empathize with him, humans are infiltrated by "Invaders From Below" and people turn into radio waves. All while "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" is probably in heavy rotation. The songs are strange and fun, and great guitar solos abound: particularly on "Invaders From Below," "Dead Tree Stroll" and the dueling leads of Mungenast and Mac Randall on "Lithium Statement." There are also a couple short spoken pieces, including a poignant but celebratory toast to his deceased father. Mungenast seems perfectly content to follow his muse (who just might be his late friend Crystal the Greyhound) wherever it takes him, and The Un-Stableboy is another weird and wonderful (if a bit short) offering from a truly individual voice.
