Details
[Edit]The acclaimed veteran cabaret singer wasn't just seeking a clever play on words when he titled his debut; he literally sings in a register lower than the classic crooners, whose styles he seeks to emulate. He's certainly chosen easy to enjoy material here, from the likes of Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hart, Stephen Sondheim, and Jule Styne. His delivery on some of the ballads is too languid and doesn't offer enough range, but he works spirited wonders on the peppier arrangements like "Just in Time," swinging with Sue Raney. It also says something that one of the more engaging tunes is Murray's own "When I Sing Low," whose brisk big-band arrangement offers vocal challenges he is happy to take on. The collection offers so many highs and lows that it's easy to pinpoint his strengths (swing) and weaknesses (sappy crooner ballads). What shines through, and may be most important, is his passion together with his eagerness to please and make the most of the vocal talent he has. The disc was selected as one of the "Best of 2002 Vocal Albums" by Talkin' Broadway.
