[Edit]Trumpeter Tom Peron, who co-leads this quartet set with drummer Bud Spangler, is a fine bop-based improviser whose first important early musical association was with great pianist Jessica Williams. Williams is also on this date (along with bassist John Wiitala) and occasionally steals solo honors. However, the main significance of the CD is the excellent playing of Peron, who contributes two originals and really digs into the five standards. Whether taking solo flights open or muted à la Miles Davis, Tom Peron displays a lot of potential for the future. Highlights include the tricky "Trumpeter's Revenge," "Oleo," an up-tempo "We See," and a lengthy investigation of "Summertime."
