[Edit]After a more than a decade burnishing and expanding the scope of his roots-conscience rock with the Heartbreakers, Tom Petty stepped into the solo spotlight on this 1989 release. But the presence of longtime Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campell as co-producer, sideman and occasional songwriting partner, and session work from longtime band mates Benmont Tench and Howie Epstein, ensure that it never strays too far from the familiar. The hits "Free Fallin'" and "I Won't Back Down" paid immediate dividends, underscoring the fact that despite some familiar surroundings, this was also one of Petty's strongest collection of songs in a decade.
