For more than 10 years Tommy Guerrero has been serving up laid-back, California-style instrumental mood music that pulls funk, jazz, dub, Latin, and slow-burning soul into its orbit. Performing on both guitar and bass, Guerrero is skilled at assembling satisfying head-bobbing grooves that fully sink in without meandering or growing tired. His guitar solos are tasteful and logical and blend smartly with funky drumming, organ, melodica, congas, flutes, and trumpet, all of which add texture and depth to these 13 cinematic compositions. The album flows by at a relaxed pace while offering good variety. Some tracks run sunny and smooth (“Yerba Buena Bump,” “March of the Masses,” “The Lonely and the Only”), some are trippy and fluid (“Bullfights On Broadway,” “The Last Maverick”), and others sound like film noir soundtracks (“On the West,” “Nomadic Static”). Lifeboats and Follies, his seventh full-length, delivers more mellow gold from the consistent Guerrero. Follow the groove and enjoy the ride.
