Fragments of a Lucky Break

Trumans Water's debut on Texas indie Emperor Jones Records marked a new era for the San Diego indie rock legends-in-the-making. The return of vocalist Glen Galloway energized the band to make some of their most inspired and cohesive work. Galloway had been experimenting in Soul-Junk for a few years by this point and his return gave the band a new sense of urgency. Fragments of a Lucky Break proves yet again that Trumans Water put together some of the most deafening sonic sounds in indie rock. "60 Seconds Over Medium" is especially overpowering. Despite it being six years since their debut, the band continues to focus on unabashedly bratty and youthful musical ingredients. Their improvisational, testosterone-fueled audio gems continued on this disc. By this point, the band had already been including horns in many of their songs, adding new fuel to the fire. The hypnotic, rhythmic jams are still triggered by the band's unmatched enthusiasm for rock. Highlights include the distortion-rich, Stooges-like anthem "Lyrical Nozzle," the dizzying "Your Courage," and the warbling lunacy of "All Eye and Movement." The album was recorded mostly in July 1997 with producer Greg Paul at Herbert House Studios.
