Ty Segall is known for sweat-drenched garage rock, while Tim Presley and his White Fence are known for their rickety, shambling psychedelia that comes off like sunbaked, otherworldly pop music. Yet their union is surprisingly far from unholy: it’s a natural. Not only is Hair uniquely textured from track to track, reflecting Segall's and Presley's respective strengths, but the songs themselves are built on paradigms that beautifully co-exist. “Time,” for instance, weaves folky, West Coast flower child vocals (Presley’s forlorn warble) and electric and acoustic guitars into a comfy foundation, like a hammock swinging in the sun, for a lazy three minutes. Then 45 seconds of Nuggets-style nirvana sends the hammock skyward. It’s an excellent example of rock ’n’ roll on the paradigm faultline. For the reverb-loving garage punk crowd, “Crybaby” and “Scissor People” will give you a workout, while the amped-up “I Am Not a Game” might prompt flashbacks for some folks. Those more inclined toward easygoing, stoner shuffle-rock will groove to “(I Can’t Get Around) You” or “Easy Rider.”
