Uh Huh Her (the L.A.-based electro-pop duo of Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey, named after a PJ Harvey album despite not making music resembling Harvey’s in any discernible way) build on their considerable success with their most focused album to date. Future Souls, their third studio full-length, comes together with its songs sharpened and finessed for mass consumption. Cold blood need run through your veins—or a lifelong dislike for synthesizers—to reject the immediate charms of the album’s one-two punch of “Innocence” and “It’s Chemical.” Chalk it up to working in a home studio without time constraints or external pressures upsetting their inner balances, but the duo’s musicianship on Future Souls has a natural flow that never attempts to get weird for weird’s sake. Instead, the focus is on making the best dance music album possible. “Nuthin’ Without Your Love” is spiked with the efforts of Che Pope (Kanye West, Jay-Z), while Grey’s former Mellowdrone bandmate and Black Delta frontman Jonathan Bates heats up natural frisson elsewhere.
