Along with his compatriot Stravinsky, Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev was a darling of the modernist Avant-garde movement of the early 20th century. His score to the ballet version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is one of his most accessible works, with lush melodies, bristling dance rhythms and brassy intensity (the “Dance of the Knights” was made famous in the UK as the theme from the TV series The Apprentice). One of today’s most respected interpreters of Prokofiev is the charismatic Russian maestro Valery Gergiev, whose sonically spectacular 2010 performance with the London Symphony Orchestra has become the new standard of the work.
