Urban pop singer Vali was born in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City, but her West Coast–flavored R&B singing led her to Los Angeles. Assisted by the Midas touch of producers Mark Baston (Alicia Keys, Beyoncé) and Tommy Brown (Black Eyed Peas), her 2012 debut EP, Kiss the Sky, spotlights Vali as not just a promising singer but a stellar songwriter as well. “Ben 'n Jerry” opens with skittering drum and bass beats and a big boomy bottom end, over which Vali sings soulfully about which delicious concoction of hippie ice cream to choose. “Top of the World” is an instant guilty pleasure of bubblegum-sticky dance-pop with an irresistible chorus. Named after the sound a kiss makes, the flirty “Muah” is a steamy serenade with organic rhythms and a peripheral string section sampled under Vali’s sultry crooning. The Academy Award–winning Juicy J cameos in the vacation-themed “Bon Voyage,” where Vali fantasizes about getting out of town with her man over looped handclaps and squiggly synthesizers. “Polaroid” muses on a paparazzi’s point of view.
