Van Halen has always been an impressive live band, with chops that other groups dream about. It isn't just Eddie Van Halen's peerless guitarwork, but also Michael Anthony's backing vocals and the rhythm section that floats where other bands pound. Sammy Hagar has his fans and detractors—replacing a legend such as David Lee Roth will divide the troops—but he nails down Roth-era tunes such as "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Panama," and "Jump" without losing the thread. Van Halen's performance of The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" breaks out the firepower, capturing the original's drama while infusing that pure Van Halen crunch. Most of the material here is from the Hagar years, with a healthy dose of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (then the latest album) spread over the concert. The Eddie Van Halen showcase "316" is a dizzying highlight. Alex Van Halen takes center stage during "Pleasure Dome," while "When It's Love," "Love Walks In," "Why Can't This Be Love," and "Dreams" fulfill those looking for the hits.
