Issued in the mid-'70s, T.B. Sheets mostly caught people’s attention for featuring two songs that were key tracks on Van Morrison’s greatest album, Astral Weeks, in their earlier, bluesier forms. On Astral Weeks, “Beside You” and “Madame George” transformed into idiosyncratic works that transcended all notions of genre, but here you feel Morrison fighting his band for control. “Madame George,” for example, includes studio talk meant to be the indifferent drunks at the bar where Morrison’s heartbreaking tale of an identity crisis goes unnoticed. It's an interesting concept, but far too literal. Morrison himself had no control over these releases, and most of the songs had already appeared on Blowin’ Your Mind! and would decades later see their most comprehensive release as Bang Masters with Sony Legacy. (As well as on endless albums that shuffle the same material in as many ways as possible.)
