Bristol, England’s Vice Squad formed in 1978 with then-teenaged Beki Bondage fronting the punk quartet. The Riot City record label was birthed two years later by Heartbeat Records boss Simon Edwards and Vice Squad’s guitar player and drummer, Dave Bateman and Shane Baldwin. This outstanding compilation kicks out all the early jams they first recorded from 1980 to 1982. Cut for the 1979 compilation Avon Calling, “Nothing” opens with a primitive brilliance before their 1981 debut single “Last Rockers” pipes in with spooky gang-vocals that sound somewhat influenced by the Misfits. “Living On Dreams” from the same single boasts a beefy bass-fuzz solo. But it’s the punchy B-side “Latex Love” that found the band first flirting with fetish-themed punk. Their second release, the Revolution EP showed the band trying their hand at punk anthems — “Young Blood” even lets loose on a fist-pumping tribal drumbeat while “Coward” flirts with a more polished production where Beki Bondage’s vocals are mixed up front for the first time. After her departure, the band carried on as proto-hardcore act Sex Aids.
