Details
[Edit]A fine collection of Spivey's best-known songs, Queen Victoria covers the singer from 1927 to 1937, and documents Spivey's original recordings, long before her rediscovery. Her earliest recordings stand up very well, especially when collected intelligently. A hugely talented vocalist and songwriter, material such as "Don't Trust Nobody Blues," and "Christmas Morning Blues" stand up well, as do her later performances with the Dot Rhythm Dukes. To go through Document's exhaustive series of her complete pre-war performances is a little daunting, and this sampler of Spivey's best is enormously appealing to anyone curious about the artist. An excellent release.
