Vincent Poag established a successful business career in his native New York. Music, however, kept nagging at him, and in 2011 he released his first album, Circling Back. The album appealed to adult-folk crowds who enjoy literate and mild acoustic music. With his second album, For the Girls, Poag continues to survey acoustic folk music, with touches of jazz, world music, and gospel among the influences. He uses a choir on “My Wings” and includes a gorgeous guest vocal from Diana Hope on “Wonder.” Naturally, “New Orleans” adds horns for a Bourbon Street vibe, while Poag is at his best when he lets his acoustic guitar fingerpicking guide the tale. “Momma” is a sentimental piece. “Forever” adds gentle orchestration to fill out the strong melody. “45 Mile an Hour Girl” shows how a “75 mile an hour guy” can assimilate with mandolins and harmonica. “Waiting for Me” carries a forlorn sense of the world. The title track aims for a Caribbean feel.
