Details
[Edit]British multi-instrumentalists Andrew Hodson (The Matinee Orchestra, drums and programming) and Steve Jefferis (cathode, guitar and synths) make a dashing duo, creating warm, propulsive sounds clearly rooted in the hypnotic looping of Neu! and the blinking, neon rhythms of Kraftwerk. “Keep Warm” and “Trans-Pennine Express” (a play on Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express”; the Pennines are an English mountain range) ignite this full-length debut with hypnotic, chewy rhythms before “Weapons Destruction” kicks the metronomic whoosh into hyperdrive in the autobahn's fast lane. It’s a colorful ride, swerving and spinning and pushed along by racing drums and a delightful interplay among wood-toned percussion, wiry guitar, and various electronic elements. “Grapefruit” follows, with handclaps, cowbell, and other flourishes that feel like a mashup of LCD and Fujiya & Miyagi. Keep Warm celebrates the sweet spot in a groove that holds you firmly mesmerized with a variety of textures and atmospherics. Field Music’s David Brewis plays bass, lending these tracks yet another layer of warmth.
