Warren Haynes is a purebred Southern rock, blues and R&B player whose solo work is every bit as deserving as his work with the Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule. Co-produced with Gordie Johnson, Man In Motion includes Ivan Neville on organ, clavinet and background vocals, Ian McLagan on organ, piano and Wurlitzer, Raymond Weber on drums and George Porter, Jr. on bass. The Grooveline Horns add punch to “Man In Motion” and “Take a Bullet” for some expert funk and R&B. Haynes’ guitar playing throughout is remarkable and tasteful. His vocals are the sound of experience. “Take a Bullet” is a lesson in phrasing as Haynes bobs and weaves. “River’s Gonna Rise” has an extra slink to its step. The Stax cover of William Bell’s and Booker T.’s “Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday” fits flawlessly into the song cycle. “Your Wildest Dreams” is a firm vamp that leaves plenty of room for interplay between the band members. After all these years, Haynes is only getting better.
