For 1974’s Dreaming My Dreams, Waylon Jennings teamed up with Cowboy Jack Clement, Nashville’s celebrated impresario, raconteur and record producer. Together they crafted the most moving and finely detailed album of Waylon’s ‘70s catalog. The opening song expresses Jennings’ disillusionment with the country music scene as he sings " ….we need to change.” Dreaming My Dreams offers that change. Rather than copy Hank Williams’ rough-hewn, honky-tonk songs, the album pursues a fusion of folk song, barroom country, and serene studio polish. Clement gives a dark velvet sheen to spare acoustic songs like “Waymore’s Blues,” “I Recall a Gypsy Woman” and “Let’s All Help the Cowboys (Sing the Blues).” “Let’s Turn Back the Years” and “She’s Looking Good” are rich, candlelit ballads, but a live recording of “Bob Wills Is Still the King” reminds the listener that Waylon remains a roadhouse emperor at heart. “Dreaming My Dreams With You” is one of his all-time great vocal performances — the song is delivered with delicacy and sincerity to summon tears from the most jaded listener.
