An epic concert released on both DVD and (in edited form) CD, Live in Chicago functions as Ween’s take on Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same: the epic rock concert document. Recorded at the Old Vic Theater in November 2003, this set positions Dean and Gene Ween in the classic rock mold, with Gene (a.k.a. Aaron Freeman) as the soaring vocalist and Dean (a.k.a. Mickey Melchiondo) as the godlike guitarist. The fact that they're backed by a top-notch band emphasizes the duo’s musical chops, which are often overshadowed by its famously kooky sense of humor. After years of collaborating with the brothers Ween, keyboardist Glenn McClelland and bassist Dave Dreiwitz fit seamlessly into the group’s sound. But it's the old-school fusion-bred intensity of drummer Claude Coleman that lights up versions of “Take Me Away” and “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot.” While dispensing with the pretension and macho posturing of '70s rock, Live in Chicago retains the lavish, celebratory nature of classic rock’s greatest live records, complete with extended jams and an acoustic mini-set.
