The Christian hip-hop trio Whosoever South covers a lot of terrain on its debut, Goin’ Home. The album’s tunes reveal a shared love for the group’s Georgia heritage, as well as an abiding faith in God’s majesty and healing power. Members Rowdy Eunice, Sarah Eunice, and Mike Mitchell take turns at the mike as they deliver soulful, honest raps that mix sanctified testimony with autobiography and expressions of Dixie pride. “Where We From,” “All the Time," and the title track hit the ear like sanctified hoedowns, interweaving classic American hymns with contemporary hip-hop elements while banjos, fiddles, and percussion add bluegrass colors. A wailing gospel undercurrent adds passion to the jazzy, trumpet-accented “That’s Life” and the praise-filled “Your Love.” Whosoever South heads uptown for the smooth club beat of “He’s Got It” and takes an island excursion for the reggaefied “He Loves Me.” What’s consistent is the easy camaraderie among the three members, reflected in a unified message that stresses roots and redemption. Produced by Asaf Fulks (Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Tyga), Goin’ Home is a refreshing celebration of the Word.
