Details
[Edit]Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies took the orchestral traditions of the eighteenth century and transformed them through the sheer force of his will. Very few symphonic works are as culturally omnipresent as the fifth, which opens with notes the composer described as the moment “fate comes knocking at the door” and forges an entirely new standard of Romantic expression. Equally monumental is the seventh, with its intriguing second movement and whirling finale. This recording is regarded as the absolute reference for both works. Under enigmatic conductor Carlos Kleiber, the Vienna Philharmonic brings thrilling energy to Beethoven’s masterpieces.
